A Review of Pecatonica by Rick Harris Posted 11/4/2014

"Pecatonica", it's not just a river any more. At least not since POINT FIVE, one of the driftless areas most loved bands, released their latest CD and named it after the little river that gently flows through south western Wisconsin.

Based in Mineral Point, Wisconsin, the band: Aaron Dunn (lead vocal & rhythm guitar), Monica Dunn (lead vocal), Paul Biere (dobro & banjo), Andy Hatch (mandolin), Carole Spelic' (upright bass), and Megan Dudle (fiddle), have been charming audiences with their own brand of bluegrass and alternate country.

In 2011 POINT FIVE released their first CD. It was a strong first try and promised great things to come. Now three years later, what their first CD promised, their newest release delivers, big time!

Blast House Studio (Madison, WI) did a fine job of capturing everything this group had to offer. The recording sounds great. Even the packaging looks good (gate fold) and includes lyric booklet.

The first song that really caught my ear was, ALWAYS IN THE MOOD. An up-tempo love song that could easily sit in any country top ten the mind could conjure up. It has a driving vocal, sweet harmony, nice hook and is super catchy. This tune deserves all the air-play it can get!

Another song I feel I should mention is a little hard to explain. It's called, LIVING IN YOUR MOUTH. It's not country, it's not pop. In fact I'm not sure what it is. Maybe it's just a mystery song, but whatever it is, it's one of the best written songs I've heard in years. It's one of those songs that pops up and just floors you. It's an exceptional piece of songwriting by Aaron Dunn. This song alone is worth the price of the CD. I will let you figure out the mystery in this one.

PECATONICA by POINT FIVE is a terrific recording, chocked full of wonderful songs about love, life, family, and memories, with fine vocals, and excellent instrumental performances. This may not be your grandfather's bluegrass, but I know one thing for sure, he'd love it! I whole heartedly recommend this CD. Also, try to catch them live. They're a terrific band and a lot of fun.

      Concert this Saturday! Posted 10/14/2014

Please join us in welcoming Kansas City based band Grand Marquis! We are super excited to host these great musicians and friends. Be sure to get your tickets early!

Grand Marquis has that classic, timeless 'straight-from-the-Kansas City-speakeasy' sound while injecting a vibrant relevance into their brand of hot swinging jazz & jumping blues. Versatile and buoyant, distinct and refreshing - a rhythm cocktail served by masterful musical mixologists.
The Grand Marquis' music can bring to mind a variety of settings and places as well: Prohibition-era KC, the streets of New Orleans, 1950's Memphis and even 1930's Paris. But their sound remains grounded in a roots influence that keeps inspiring the Grand Marquis to create, innovate and build off a solid foundation of American music. Theirs is a style that defies the limitations of category, whether jazz, blues or swing, yet finds favor with a wide audience culturally, demographically and intergenerationally.

Tickets for the event are $15 and are available at Brown Paper Tickets, at Berget Jewelry in Mineral Point, or at the door.
