The Chapel was planned in 1886 on the direction of the Rev. Jenkin Lloyd Jones, a son of the family who was also a prominent Unitarian minister in Chicago. The designer of record was Joseph Silsbee, who had designed buildings for Jenkin in Chicago, and a draughtsman assigned to the job was Jenkin's nephew, Frank Lloyd Wright.
